Symbian ha annunciato ieri tramite un comunicato stampa la disponibilita' del nuovo sistema operativo per smarthphones Symbian OS™ v9.3. Fra le novita' di rilievo spiccano, per i dispositivi di ultima generazione, il supporto all'HSDPA, il supporto nativo al Wi-Fi ed all'UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) il sistema che permette agli operatori di portare voce (VoWLAN), dati ed IMS/SIP (IP Multimedia Subsystem / Session Initiation Protocol), anche su reti "economiche" Wi-Fi. Ulteriori migliorie (come la riduzione dei tempi di avvio, migliore gesione della memoria, ecc.) sono state implementate in questo nuovo sistema operativo. Rovescio della medaglia sta pero' nell'obbligatorieta' di firmare digitalmente i software installabili, pena il non funzionamento degli stessi, il che presuppone l'estromissione di buona parte delle applicazioni freeware e di quelle gia' prodotte, ma anche della moltitudine di virus in circolazione.

  • The Symbian Verification Suite to support compatibility and phone integration for creating Symbian OS variants, reducing time taken to customize phones for operators targeting different market segments
  • A fully searchable on-line edition of the Symbian OS Library including a significant amount of new content
• Backwards compatibility from v9.1, easy migration for phone vendors, technology and third party software providers
• Reference design for Symbian OS v9.3 with Freescale and Nokia S60
• Hindi and Vietnamese language support for improved market coverage

Support for new hardware

• Native support for WiFi
• USB 2.0 on-the-go, allowing faster device connectivity

Support for key operator services and requirements

• Firmware over the air (FOTA) provisioning, FOTA allows network operators to provide OTA software upgrades or fixes lowering cost of ownership

• Introduction of IPSec for UMA service (Voice over IP)
